I know some of you like to see what goes into making a custom figure so here's a before and after shot of Shuma Gorath. It took six bottom halves of McFarlane's Grendel's Mother figures for the tentacles, a light-up Christmas nose for the center eye, and is all held together with a custom sculpted body made from Apoxie Sculpt (grey material) and Fixit Sculpt (white material). I used a basecoat of medium green, then did a wash of dark green, and then highlights of yellow-green (spawn eye color). The center eye was painted freehand and has all the little lines and pupil rings to it. Press the button on his back and the pupil/iris pulses with light!

how do you know which parts of a figure should be highlighted? And, how do you decide what shade to highlight with?
Ahhh that's awesome! It reminds me of a brittle star. Awesome customization, it's cool to see the WIP too

Nice seeing the WIP. Thats quite a bit of fodder for this one, you must like him quite a bit. Did you sculpt the back to? like where the button is?

Any raised areas usually. Drybrushing is your basic method of highlighting. And the shade depends on your base color and how much 'light' you want to replicate. Dark green base, use a light green highlight. Want a different light-shade, do a more yellow-green highlight.

That would be cool if you took a scan of the game and made him and some one look like they are fighting in it pseudo 2D/3D mayhem style.

What if was using an already brightish colour, like gold? or if I was using white?
Then you'd use gold as your highlight color and make the base color something like dark yellow, or even black. Metallics are a little different than solid colors.
