So your art means nothing, right?

Today I present to you my gripe dealing with artists here and religion. It's about how there's all these artists on dA here who don't believe in God (atheists darwins, bear with me because I might lump too many together here) but still want people to acknowledge that their work is special in some way. They submit their art that took months of work and sit back all proud thinking "Isn't this something special?" They'll even complain when someone steals art, compliment other artists, and ask for critiques.

Then when the topic of God is brought up in a reply or journal they firmly state that there is nothing after you die, you just poof into oblivion. They go on and on about how the human race was just a cosmic accident, evolving from protozoa and that no individual is special. You'll hear them rave about how insignificant a person is and how nothing they do on earth matters in the universe. How it's all just cosmic dust.

Then why on earth should I bother with your art? If you don't think you're special, or that what you created is..why should anyone else? hell, why are you even on deviantArt creating anything at all if your talent and skills were just a big accident and mean nothing in the long run? They said it themselves, nobody is special.

If that offended any of you, good. It means you're actually thinking about what I wrote and have read this far along. If you're one of those people who believe all your talent as an artist came about from nothing and will end up meaning nothing in the end, I ask that you think hard and long about why you're here showing the world it.

But if you believe your art to mean something as it comes from your hands as pictures and words from original thoughts in your mind, I want you to think about how that happened. That just maybe there is a reason for everyone to exist and a creator behind it all. Because if you believe your talent was an accident, how hypocritical is it of you to think anything of it at all or want others to.

I'll leave you with that thought.

Hm. I honestly didn't think about this too much. I guess, we make art comment on it so that we distract ourselves enough from the thought that in the grand scheme of things we count for very little.

I think Atheists who supposedly believe that nothing's important in a pessimistic jaded way are just saying that to rile up religious people, it's like a sport.

The non-religious people that I personally know state that, since they don't believe there's anything after they die, they think that what they do now is special in and of itself, rather than a means to an end -- like doing something good so you can go to heaven versus doing something good just because it's good. They don't feel that they need religion to compel them to do good things, and that lacking religion shouldn't mean you're suddenly not important at all. Everything is special because nothing is special, and our very existence is such a random occurrence that we shouldn't take it for granted and should do what we can to make it the best experience possible. Which I think is getting to the same end result as a religious person, except taking a different road to get there.

(I'm Catholic, btw.)

There are some of us who do not have a religion and likewise enjoy making art for ourselves regardles of if people look at it/comment or not. And personaly I think that a person such as myself (who I might add does not fit the above description in your journal despite not having a religion) am allowed to have my belief seeing as how I happen to also fully respect those who DO have a religion. Just my two cents on the matter and no offence meant

Okay,I'm confuse here.Are you saying that in order to be an artist and create art I need to believe in god and if I don't I'm not an artist and my art isn't art at all?
